Machining of harden materials

Machining of Harden Materials - ALNO Product Services - West Gosford

The materials world has advanced rapidly over recent years and the materials technology continues to evolve as we communicate. Therefore machinists also need to evolve with regard to the machining processes the old days of "this is how we machined it in the past" are slowly falling away and more machinists are dating there skills and knowledge base particularly with regard to hard materials.

In general hard materials fall into one of two categories such as single component materials or composite materials. The team at ALNO Product services has vast experience in machining both types of hard materials from harden tools steels such as heat treated hot / cold work tools like O1A or composite materials such Alumina Zirconia. Hard materials are highly sensitive to the machining process and in many cases the selection of machining technique is predominately that most critical factor that can determine the success or failure in achieving a target tolerances, surface finishes, shapes and or profiles.

Additional factors that are important to successful machining include work holding method, cutting tool geometry and cutting tool material, positioning of coolant with regard to working materials along with machine tool accuracy to a limited extent.

In many case the machining of harden materials comes down to know how or hard materials machining experience that the operator has. It may be the case where you have the latest machining and that latest programming techniques with computer controlled machining but if you have an unskilled operator or operator with limited hard materials machining experience then this will be seen in the resultant quality of the components machined. For the majority of machine shops these challenges become too difficult to machine harden materials. ALNO Product Services are different they have the experience that is required to machine hard materials.

Over the past 20 years ALNO Product Services have successfully machined harden materials with tolerances and geometric tolerances ranging from ± 5mm through to ± 0.01mm, some harden materials that ALNO Product Services have machined in the past have included to name a few:

Hot work Tool Steels

Cold worked Tool steels

High Speed Tool Steels

Composite Ceramics - Alumina Zirconia - Tungsten Carbite
