Planning to product: CNC machining process

A guide on the CNC machining process from planning to product.

At our company we take our client’s projects very seriously and we always strive for excellence. That’s why our process guidelines from planning to end product is so important. Our process is detailed and ensures both customer satisfaction and ease of manufacture.

Step 1. CAD drawing of final design is submitted to us

Step 2. A code for CNC machine is prepared

Step 3. The newly created code is uploaded onto the machine and start up tests are conducted

Step 4. A trial run is conducted to minimise losses and faulty parts

Step 5. We manufacture your final product

Step 6. We deliver your new product and provide ongoing support to ensure you are satisfied

Unlike manual manufacturing, CNC machines are capable of building all sorts of unique 3D shapes. The key attributes of repetition and pattern work guarantees precision in products made of both metal and plastic.

How to manage design projects: Part 2

Outsourcing
Select your external team by making sure you understand the level of innovation required for your project.  Check the history of the company and the quality of their work in their track record.  Developing a brief for your project is vital and larger projects will need smaller sub-briefs for different sections of the project.  For bigger projects the external agency can bill the costs of this brief as part of the project.   Include your supplier in this process as they will provide valuable insight with their expertise and point of view and also give them a sense of ownership of a part of the project.

Develop your project plan
The key to this plan is being detailed and making sure everyone is on the same track.

This will include tools that can be used internally and externally to manage aspects of the project like budgets and gaining acceptance of project milestones.  For larger projects you will need more input from all members involved and the time spent on this will also need to be incorporated into costs accordingly.

Keep up to date
Make sure all your product management practices are current and can be translated well across many different channels. Keeping progress reports are also an excellent way to help you stay in control and stay informed.  Monitor the project and provide feedback and updates as necessary for the big picture but try to resist the urge to micro-manage.

Enjoy the process
The creative process can be a very rewarding experience and everyone involved should be encourage to feel the same.  For the organisation and the people involved using a solid set of project management skills will ensure a successful project.

However there is still more that needs to be done and these fields will be covered in later posts.

What is Design? - ALNO Product Services - West Gosford

What is Design?

Design unofficially refers to a proposal for the construction of something in most cases the better designs are a calibration of minds where ideas are generated this process is generally at a high level intellectually or refers to the process of creating such a proposal. At the lower levels of intellectual design, the design just exists and this can be produced as simply by hitting something with a hammer or through construction. This lower level of design generally has less focus on calibration and is generally formed by a single individual in many cases fails to meet the design intent.

Designing general requires consideration of one or in most cases a combination of the following:

Forrn aesthetic appeal styling

Purpose function ergonomics

Cost Economic Factors associated in construction or manufacturing unit cost price

Process of manufacture or construction

Sociopolitical - interaction of social and political factors

Materials and Engineering – structural strength and material properties

These design choices are generally defined in a design brief by the client prior to beginning the design process. The design brief is what the design team keeps in mind throughout the process of deriving compromises of the design choices. Communication of the design compromises is generally communicated through a sketch or a 3 dimensional solid model. The latest solid modeling tools offer fast and costs effective methods of communicating a design to the team and or client.
